Doug Marlette, 38, spent 15 years as an editorial cartoonist at the Charlotte Observer. He has published several compilations of his work, including the recently released "Shred This Book," a collection of his cartoons on Ronald Reagan. He also is creator of the comic strip "Kudzu."
Born in Greensboro, NC, and raised in Laurel, MS and Sanford, FL, Marlette first began drawing cartoons at the age of 16. He attended Florida State University and was published in the student newspaper, The Flambeau.
He joined the Charlotte Observer in 1972, then moved to The Atlanta Constitution in 1987. The Pulitzer Prize was awarded for work appearing in both newspapers. His work has also appeared in Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and Der Spiegel.
Marlette was the first editorial cartoonist to win a Nieman Fellowship to Harvard University. He also won the John Fischetti Editorial Cartoon Competition and the First Amendment Award in 1986; the Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi Distinguished Service Award in 1985; the Robert F. Kennedy Award in 1984 and a National Headliner Award in 1983.
